i almost forgot about you xanga

it's true. i almost forgot about this space.

guess what? i'm a teacher.

i know, crazy- right? but after one week of practice teaching at summer school... i think i love it. this week my days have been long... very long. but this week a kid called ME his TEACHER. he said, "can you do me a favor? i need my teacher to fax this to the judge..." as he pulled a crumpled piece of paper, that turned out to be his latest report card, out of his pocket. it was kind of incredible... they call me ms. montgomery... and they (mostly) do what i ask them to...

i am their teacher.

they are my students.

wow.

the school district is labeled "high need" for a reason; most of the kids' skills are SERIOUSLY below grade level. i'm teaching 8th grade math for the summer school and i am apalled at how far behind they are... but what an opportunity they present for me! an opportunity to TEACH and encourage and love and to model Christ and maybe even to inspire. it's an incredible opportunity!

during our orientation on the first day of the summer program there was a woman who has been an educator in the IPS district for over 20 years that gave us great advice. she reminded us that our job is NOT to rescue the kids we meet. our job is to TEACH them, so that they can resuce themselves. mmm- i love it.
